China Seen Tightening Grip on Macao | Source: The New Lens

China is tightening its grip on Macao, having incorporated the former Portuguese colony into a cooperation zone with Guangzhou, capital of China’s Guangdong province.  China’s hard-line approach in Macao is widely seen as part of a larger campaign to regain central control over society and business across the country. Macao, like Hong Kong, is a “special administrative region” of China and supposed to have a high degree of autonomy under the “one country two systems” framework.
