China to step up strategic mineral resource exploration during 2021-2025 | Source: Reuters

China will step up exploration of strategic mineral resources including petroleum, natural gas, copper, chrome, tungsten, rare earths and others during 2021-2025, the top economic planner said. The National Development and Reform Commission revealed the plan for promoting development in resource-dependent regions on its website.

China urges Japan not to ‘complicate the situation’ in East China Sea | Source: SCMP

“China reiterates its solemn position on the Diaoyu Islands and the East China Sea and urges Japan to respect China’s sovereignty and security concerns and refrain from taking actions that may complicate the situation,” according to the Chinese foreign ministry.  Beijing has accused Tokyo of siding with Washington to contain China. Japan has also recently been more outspoken on China’s military presence in the South China Sea, its intimidation of Taiwan, and alleged human rights abuses in the Xinjiang region.

Chinese military forces exercise near Taiwan in response to US visit | Source: Military Times

Chinese military forces are holding exercises near Taiwan in response to a visit by a U.S. congressional delegation to the island.Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said China considers the delegation’s visit a “serious violation” of U.S. commitments not to have formal relations with Taiwan, which China claims as its territory.

Chinese firms urged to invest in PH | Source: Manila Times

Chinese investors are being urged to explore business opportunities in the Philippines, during the Philippines-China (Fujian) Economic and Trade Promotion Conference held last November 7. They are urging Chinese companies to invest in nickel and cobalt processing facilities and even to move forward to invest in energy storage production including EV (electric vehicle) batteries and renewable energy battery banks. Philippines is the second largest in terms of deposits of nickel and sixth for deposits for cobalt, and the two minerals are key ingredients in lithium ion batteries.

China urge jointly with Russia UN Security Council to Lift Economic Sanctions on N. Korea | Source: VOA NEWS

China is set to introduce with Russia a joint resolution to the United Nations Security Council calling for an end to a host of economic sanctions on North Korea. China to build Tiansuan satellite constellation to support 6G development | Sources: Global Times

Chinese private satellite company Spacety and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) have inked a deal to jointly launch a series of satellites to build an open-source platform that could support the development of 6G network, satellite internet and other technologies. It will also contribute to the integration of space networks and the intelligent computing industry chain in Shenzhen and broader the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, reports said.

China to Apply to Join Digital Economy Partnership Agreement | Sources: Bloomberg – Asia Nikkei

China will apply to join the Digital Economy Partnership Agreement (DEPA, that currently covers Singapore, New Zealand and Chile, while Canada has expressed an interest to join it) to strengthen international cooperation on digital regulation. The application comes a few weeks after Beijing submitted its application to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership and as the U.S. seeks to drum up interest in a regional digital trade agreement that would exclude China.

China Seeks Upgrade of ASEAN Relationship to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership | Source: Sputnik

After 30 years of dialogue with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), China is reportedly seeking to upgrade that relationship as its ties to the region deepen. It also comes as the United States tries to boost its own ties in Southeast Asia and wrest the area from Chinese influence. China has grown closer to ASEAN’s 10 member states since it was admitted as an observer in 1991, becoming its largest trading partner last year. That trend will continue as China’s Belt and Road Initiative infrastructure megaproject continues to expand. However, not all is immediately ready. There are regular confrontations between China and ASEAN countries involving fishing fleets, petroleum exploration vessels, and warships conducting maritime maneuvers.
