Russia, Iran and China to hold joint drills in Gulf | Source: The New Arab

Russia, Iran and China will hold joint maritime exercises in the Gulf around late 2021 or early 2022, Russia’s ambassador to Tehran said. The drills involving naval vessels from the three countries will be focused on shipping security and combating piracy.

China warns Japan over plans for ‘2+2’ talks at party level with Taiwan | Source: The Week

In a sign of the wider worry among US allies about the rise of China, Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is pushing for talks on security issues with the ruling party in Taiwan. The LDP team called on the government to deepen ties with Taiwan and prepare for the possibility of a Chinese invasion of the self-ruled island,” The Japan Times reported. Not surprisingly, the Chinese government stated its opposition to the planned dialogue between Japan and Taiwan.

Taiwan government thanks Biden for restating US support | Source: RTI

Biden reaffirmed the United States’ backing for Taiwan in an interview with ABC News on Wednesday.

Taiwan’s Presidential Office and foreign ministry have thanked US President Joe Biden for restating Washington’s firm support of Taiwan. Biden says the United States has made a “commitment” to its partners, including Taiwan, and the situation in those countries is “not even comparable” to Afghanistan (from where US is leaving). Taiwan’s Presidential Office says recent arms sales to Taiwan have shown that US backing for Taiwan is still “rock solid”.
