What is called the “Chinese Digital Silk Road” is now dominating telecommunications in the Western Balkans, i.e. Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania and Kosovo. By providing telecommunication networks in the Balkans, and especially 5G digital technology, China establishes its geopolitical influence in Europe, raising concerns in the Western World. The Digital Silk Road is an alliance of Chinese ICT companies and the Chinese state with the aim to increase the strategic power of China.

One of the key factors behind the swelling wave of IP litigations a growing amount of IP owned by Chinese businesses. China leads in 6G patents | Source: Electronics Weekly

China is responsible for 40.3% of 6G patent filings, followed by the U.S. with 35.2%, by Japan with 9.9%, Europe with 8.9%, and South Korea with 4.2%, reports the Nikkei. The University of Electronic Science and Technology of China already launched the world’s first 6G satellite. 6G is  said to be more than 10 times faster than 5G.

China has deployed the world’s largest and most active 5G mobile network in the world, with more than 392 million mobile phones being connected to 5G gear. The country’s 5G sector has integrated well with other sectors such as big data and artificial intelligence, to generate new business models to help transform traditional industries like healthcare, industrial internet and super high definition videos. China is facing pressure from some countries, led by the US, to thwart the country’s high-tech rise. In particular, the US and some of its allies have placed bans on Huawei’s 5G and ZTE under the pretense of national security.

An Italian telecommunications company has been given conditional approval to use the china company Huawei for its 5G radio access network, according to Reuters. The U.S. has tried to persuade European countries to ban Huawei, claiming the company is a security threat.
