Shabaab takes credit for suicide bombing at a Mogadishu cafe | Source: Long War Journal

Shabaab, al Qaeda’s branch in East Africa, claimed responsibility for a deadly suicide bombing in Mogadishu that left several people dead at a packed restaurant not far from the headquarters of Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA). Shabaab continues to be one of al Qaeda’s most effective branches, with significant control over much of southern Somalia, and ability to strike in Mogadishu and Kenya.

U.S. military hands key air base back over to Afghanistan for first time in 20 years | Source: Global News

After nearly 20 years, the U.S. military left Afghanistan’s Bagram Airfield, the epicenter of its war to oust the Taliban and hunt down the al-Qaida perpetrators of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on America. The withdrawal from Bagram Airfield is the clearest indication that the last of the 2,500-3,500 U.S. troops have left Afghanistan or are nearing a departure, months ahead of President Joe Biden’s promise that they would be gone by Sept. 11.

At Least 30 Killed in Al Shabaab Attack in Somalia | Source: Asharq Al-Awsat

An estimated 30 people died when Somalia’s extremist al Shabaab group launched an attack on a military base in Galmudug’s Wisil town, located in central Somalia, triggering a fight with government troops and armed locals. The al-Qaeda-allied al Shabaab has been fighting in Somalia for more than a decade to try to topple the country’s central government.

Al Qaeda Renews Its Focus on Antisemitism and Attacking Israel | Source: ADL ORG

In recent weeks, Al Qaeda has dedicated an unusual amount of its propaganda towards encouraging attacks on Israel, Jewish institutions, and Jewish people. Given shifts in the Islamist extremist environment—including the outbreak of violence between Israel and Hamas and Al Qaeda’s expectation that it will gain a safe operational haven in Afghanistan—this suggests that Al Qaeda may intend to recommit to attack Israel or the Jewish Diaspora.
