The Russian Ministry of Defence has accused Azerbaijani forces of violating the ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh as tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan continue to rise. Since the end of the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War brought the deployment of Russian peacekeepers to the region, clashes have continued to take between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces.

Truce Violation Reported In Nagorno-Karabakh | Source: Azatutyun

Lavrov, Azerbaijan’s top diplomat discuss situation on border with Armenia | Source: TASS

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Azerbaijani counterpart Jeyhun Bayramov discussed ways of normalizing the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. “They reaffirmed their mutual commitment to implementing the agreements reached during Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s working visit to Russia on July 20,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

Azerbaijani army retaliates after fresh Armenian attack targets positions in Nakhchivan | Source: Yeni Safak

Azerbaijan’s Minister of Defense ordered the country’s army to “be ready” for any Armenian border provocations in light of recent developments in the Kalbajar region. Relations between the former Soviet republics have been tense since 1991, when the Armenian military occupied Nagorno-Karabakh, a territory internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, and seven adjacent regions. New clashes erupted last September and ended on Nov. 10 with a Russia-brokered cease-fire.

Turkey may drill more boreholes in its search for gas in the eastern Mediterranean, Energy Minister said, an area where its search and drilling operations led to a standoff with Greece and Cyprus last year. If the gas can be commercially extracted, the discovery could transform Turkey’s dependence on Russia, Iran and Azerbaijan for energy imports.
