Rwandan, Mozambican forces retake port from insurgents | Source: Washington Post

A joint force of Mozambican and Rwandan troops has regained control of a strategic port from Islamic extremists who held the town in northern Mozambique for a year, the countries’ defense ministries have announced. Rwanda’s troops have rapidly helped Mozambique’s armed forces achieve victories against the insurgents, who have created a humanitarian emergency in northern Cabo Delgado province and surrounding areas.

EU agrees military training mission for Mozambique | Source: Business Recorder

EU ambassadors gave the green light to setting up a military mission in Mozambique to help train its armed forces battling jihadists in the north of the country. A deadly insurgency by militants linked to the Islamic State group has ravaged the gas-rich Cabo Delgado province since late 2017, claiming some 3,000 lives and displacing 800,000 people.

  • U.S. special operations troops have deployed to Mozambique on a mission to assist the country’s counterterrorism forces with the growing threat of Islamic State militants.   • MOZAMBIQUE: A growing Islamist insurgency in northern Mozambique entered its fourth year this week, with experts saying there is no end in sight. Since the first attack in 2017 by al-Shabab (considered the Mozambique affiliate of Islamic State) in the province of Cabo Delgado, rich in gas resources, militants have taken control of territory in the northern province, including a strategic port. More than 2,000 people have been killed since the beginning of the conflict, with at least 600 attacks across the restive province.
