Russia monitoring talk of Turkish military base in Azerbaijan | Source: Reuters

Moscow is closely monitoring developments around a potential Turkish military base in Azerbaijan, a move that could require Russia to take steps to ensure its own security and interests, the Kremlin said. The South Caucasus, part of the former Soviet Union, is of special interest to Russia which has traditionally regarded it as its own sphere of influence.

Tehran intervenes in Armenia and Azerbaijan conflict | Source: Asia News It

Iranian Foreign Minister visited Armenia and Azerbaijan to discuss the lack of agreement on the demarcation of borders. The fact could be a continuous source of problems, forcing the border lines of the Islamic Republic to be redrawn. Failure to define the borders between the two Caucasian countries risks separating Armenia from Iran.

NAGORNO-KARABAKH:

  • The first meeting between the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia after their six-week war over Nagorno-Karabakh last year has clearly shown that Russia is rebuilding its leadership in the Caucasus, leaving little room for Turkey, which helped Azerbaijan prevail on the battlefield. According to the joint statement, Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia will establish a joint working group, while Turkey was not even mentioned in the statement.
