EU envoys extend sanctions against Crimea | Source: Tass

The European Union has extended restrictions against Crimea for another year. The EU introduced restrictions against Crimea in June 2014 in response to what Brussels calls “the illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol by Russia.

  • Russia’s defense minister ordered troops back to their permanent bases following massive drills in Crimea that involved dozens of navy ships, hundreds of warplanes and thousands of troops in a show of force amid tensions with Ukraine. Last week, Russia has announced that it would close broad areas of the Black Sea near Crimea to foreign navy ships and state vessels until November, a move that drew Ukrainian protests and raised Western concerns.

  • The Group of Seven major industrialized countries issued a strong condemnation of what it called Russia’s ongoing “occupation” of the Crimea, seven years after Moscow annexed the peninsula from Ukraine. They call on the Russian Federation “to stop fueling the conflict by providing financial and military support to the armed formations it backs in eastern Ukraine. The seven countries said. “Russia’s attempts to legitimize it are not, and will not, be recognized.”
