Relations between Turkey and Egypt have been fractured since Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi came to power in a 2013 military coup and launched a crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood. Turkey became a safe haven for top Muslim Brotherhood figures, opposed to the government in Cairo. Turkey and Egypt have serious cooperation opportunities in a wide range of areas from the eastern Mediterranean to Libya.

Egyptian president Abdel Fattah el-Sissi.

The Egyptian president held talks with his counterpart in Djibouti as part of Egyptian diplomatic attempts to build more African alliances amid an ongoing water dispute with Ethiopia. They also stressed their “strategic partnership” on fighting terror in the Horn of Africa and underscored their cooperation over security issues in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

The US is sending its first ever Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa on a trip to Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea and Ethiopia in what the State Department said was to address “interlinked” security issues in the region.

  • Egypt and Israel said they may build an undersea natural-gas pipeline connecting the two countries, as they seek to collaborate on exporting the fuel to Europe. The new pipeline would allow Israel to export more gas to Egypt. Egypt is seeking to become a major hub for exporting LNG to Europe, where demand is growing as governments transition from dirtier fossil fuels such as coal and oil. The announcement comes as nations in the eastern Mediterranean ramp up investments in offshore gas fields.
