The United States has decided to boost the presence of its armed forces in Greece. This enhanced footprint is presented as a natural deployment in a NATO ally’s territory, but behind that explanation lies Washington’s worry of a deterioration in Greek-Turkish relations at a time when Turkish President Erdogan can no longer be viewed as a steadfast ally of the West.

Turkey may drill more boreholes in its search for gas in the eastern Mediterranean, Energy Minister said, an area where its search and drilling operations led to a standoff with Greece and Cyprus last year. If the gas can be commercially extracted, the discovery could transform Turkey’s dependence on Russia, Iran and Azerbaijan for energy imports.

EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN:

  • Turkey has told Israel, Greece and the European Union to seek its permission before assuming work on a projected undersea power cable in disputed eastern Mediterranean waters. EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN:

  • Saudi Arabia dashed Turkey’s hopes of a quick reconciliation that would overcome differences with Ankara, after Saudi F-15C fighters arrived on the island of Crete with their ground crews to participate in a training exercise with Greece in the Eastern Mediterranean, in a move that seems to have received Egyptian support. The arrival of Saudi fighters at Souda air base in Crete to take part in the “Ain al-Saqr 1” exercise increases French-Greek-Egyptian pressures on Turkey to check its expansion in the Eastern Mediterranean.
