China urges gas importers to secure supplies at any cost to avoid energy crunch this winter | Source: RT

With the world grappling with an energy crisis amid the post-pandemic recovery, China has urged its liquefied natural gas (LNG) importers to secure enough fuel before winter. The large state-owned companies are ready to pay high spot prices to attract shipments away from rivals in Asia and Europe despite the extreme losses they could be facing. Meanwhile, the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission said that banks should prioritize lending to qualified mines and power plants so that they could increase thermal coal and electricity output.

ARCTIC:

  • Russia Highlights Northern Sea Route’s potential after week-long shutdown of the Suez Canal. The Northern Sea Route (NSR), which runs along Russia’s Arctic coast, dramatically slashes journey times for goods shipped from Asia to Europe and has a huge potential to ramp up cargo traffic, the Russian Ministry of Energy said. According to the ministry, given the growing global energy trade, including in LNG, the emergence of additional short shipping routes is becoming a matter of time.

WHAT IS HAPPENING IN GEOPOLITICS? EUROPE:

RUSSIAN GAS PIPELINES:

  • The EU countries are divided when it comes to the matter of constructing new Russian gas pipelines. As a result of the imprisonment of Alexei Navalny upon his return to Russia in January 2021 and the repression of the opposition in many Russian cities, the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling to halt the Nord Stream 2 project. However, this decision was not unequivocally supported by Germany, which continues to back the construction of the gas pipeline. Washington’s position is contrary to that of Berlin, which seeks to finish the project regardless of the position of the US.

WHAT IS HAPPENING IN GEOPOLITICS? EUROPE:

RUSSIAN GAS PIPELINES:

  • It seems that the position of the new American administration remains identical to that of Donald Trump in terms of sanctions against EU-Russia energy projects. Thus, it could be assumed that a number of sanctions against entities involved in the Nord Stream 2 project would be uphold. This is not only due to strictly political but also economic attitudes. Washington is eager to export LNG to European markets, but the Nord Stream 2 project limits the demand for further supplies of this energy source to Europe.

EUROPE:

NORD STREAM 2:
  • US expanded sanctions against Nord Stream 2 (that includes the construction of two pipelines from the coast of Russia through the Baltic Sea to Germany). Will directly affect more than 120 companies from over 12 European countries and will block about 700 mln euro of investments for completing construction of the pipeline. The sanctions seem to be designed to increase the supply of more expensive American LNG to Europe.
  • Germany is preparing to strike back if the US introduces additional sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
