Shabaab takes credit for suicide bombing at a Mogadishu cafe | Source: Long War Journal

Shabaab, al Qaeda’s branch in East Africa, claimed responsibility for a deadly suicide bombing in Mogadishu that left several people dead at a packed restaurant not far from the headquarters of Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA). Shabaab continues to be one of al Qaeda’s most effective branches, with significant control over much of southern Somalia, and ability to strike in Mogadishu and Kenya.

At Least 20 Killed in Suicide Bomber Attack at Army Camp in Somalia’s Mogadishu | Source: Sputnik

A suicide bombing attack at a military training base in the Somali capital of Mogadishu has left at least 20 people dead, the majority of them civilians, local media reported. So far, no militant group has claimed responsibility for the explosion.

  • SOMALIA: Five Islamic extremists stormed the Elite Hotel (often frequented by politicians, journalists, civil society activists) in the Lido beach area of Mogadishu. Ten people were dead and five militants were killed, after Somalia’s security forces have put an end to the attack. Somalia’s homegrown Islamic extremist rebels, al-Shabab, who are allied to al-Qaida, have claimed responsibility for the attack.

  • SOMALIA: a suicide bomber blew himself in a bar close to Mogadishu port. At least two people died. The restaurant is popular with security officers and government officials who work in the nearby area, regularly targeted by Islamist militants. There was no claim of responsibility for the attack.
