Russia using gas-price crisis to bully EU, Ukraine says | Source: EU Observer

Olha Stefanishyna

Russia is manipulating gas prices to force EU concessions on energy security, Ukraine has warned, adding that Russia is really manipulating prices to make them use Nord Stream 2 (Russia’s new gas pipeline to Germany) to stabilise the prices’. Russia is pushing to operate the pipeline as its own monopoly, harming EU energy security by enabling it to cut gas to Western allies such as Poland and Ukraine in future.

Gazprom Rejects Gas Transit Increase as Europe Faces Winter Fuel Crisis | Source: The Moscow Times

The Suja gas metering station on the Russian-Ukrainian border.

Russian gas giant Gazprom has turned down an option to maximize gas shipments to Europe as the continent faces a looming energy crisis amid surging natural gas prices. The decision sparked a further surge in wholesale gas prices in Europe, which have doubled over the last two months. Politicians in both Europe and the U.S. have criticized Gazprom, sensing a geopolitical move by Russia. The price surge comes at a crucial time in energy relations between the EU and Russia. Gazprom’s controversial Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline has just been completed and is awaiting certification by German regulators.

Russian gas supplies to Europe via new Nord Stream 2 pipeline will start this year | Source: RT

Moscow expects gas supplies through the Nord Stream 2 pipeline to begin by the end of 2021, Minister for Energy Nikolai Shulginov told. Work on the pipeline was suspended for a year in December 2019 after Swiss pipe-laying vessel Allseas abandoned the project due to possible US sanctions. Washington repeatedly attempted to hinder the construction process with sanctions, dubbing the project Russia’s geopolitical “weapon” and siding with ally Ukraine, which believes Nord Stream 2 will deprive Kiev of transit fees.

US waives sanctions on Nord Stream 2 project | SOURCE: KHL

The US government has agreed to waive the sanctions it imposed on the company building the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, the project that will see natural gas transported from Russia to Germany, via the Baltic Sea. The US has long been sceptical of the project, claiming Russia’s motives for supplying gas to Europe are as much geopolitical as economic.

Merkel Says Biden Took Step Closer to Germany on Nord Stream 2 | SOURCE: BLOOMBERG

A construction worker passes between pipework on the European Gas Pipeline Link (EUGAL) Radeland 2 compressor station, which accommodates downstream gas flows from the Nord Stream 2 project, in Radeland, Germany, on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2020. Nord Stream 2, which is designed to carry as much as 55 billion cubic meters of Gazprom PJSC’s gas to the EU every year, is seen by opponents as the Kremlin tightening its energy grip on the region. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has welcomed the decision by U.S. president Joe Biden to drop most of the sanctions against the disputed Nord stream 2 pipeline project. However, Germany and the U.S. continue to have different views of the disputed project, Merkel made clear.

Nord Stream 2 sanctions waivers could aid Russia-U.S. ties, Moscow says | SOURCE: REUTERS

Workers are seen at the construction site of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, near the town of Kingisepp, Leningrad region, Russia, June 5, 2019.

Russian officials said Moscow’s fraught ties with Washington could benefit from the waiving of U.S. sanctions on the company in charge of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, after a report said the Biden administration was set to lift them. “If the media leaks turn out to be true there will probably be a chance for a gradual transition toward the normalisation of bilateral ties.”
