China looks to Russian coal to help ease its power shortage crisis | Source: SCMP

China’s attempts to address its power shortage have received a boost through efforts to increase imports of coal and electricity from Russia. “The shortages in power supplies in China should reinforce the energy alliance between Moscow and Beijing, if only because Russia is the nearest external source of coal, gas and oil for China. As one consequence, Beijing may give the final go-ahead to the Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline project, which would bring Russian gas from western Siberia into China via Mongolia.”

CHINA-RUSSIA:

  • Energy deals are creating a powerful alliance between China and Russia. To highlight this pivot, the world’s largest energy producer, Gazprom, has started a feasibility study for the company’s next massive pipeline, the Power of Siberia-2 pipeline, through Mongolia towards its northeast. The agreement was struck during the height of tensions between Moscow and the West, when Russia was desperate to show its geopolitical independence in the face of western obstruction.

WHAT IS HAPPENING IN GEOPOLITICS? EUROPE:

NORD STREAM 2:

  • The threats of sanctions by the United States against the German-Russian Baltic Sea gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 are working: After considerable pressure from the government in Washington, at least 18 European companies have now ended their participation in the controversial project or have promised to withdraw, as stated in a report by the US State Department to Congress. The United States is attacking the project as they fear that their partners in Europe are too dependent on Russia and Russian gas.

WHAT IS HAPPENING IN GEOPOLITICS? MIDDLE EAST:

GAS PIPELINE:

  • Egypt and Israel said they may build an undersea natural-gas pipeline connecting the two countries, as they seek to collaborate on exporting the fuel to Europe. The new pipeline would allow Israel to export more gas to Egypt. Egypt is seeking to become a major hub for exporting LNG to Europe, where demand is growing as governments transition from dirtier fossil fuels such as coal and oil. The announcement comes as nations in the eastern Mediterranean ramp up investments in offshore gas fields.

  • RELATED TO NORD STREAM 2: Ukraine’s natural-gas chief has urged the United States to expand sanctions aimed at stopping construction of the Kremlin-backed Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which would bring gas to Germany under the Baltic Sea, bypassing Ukraine. The pipeline could potentially deprive Kyiv of billions of dollars in transit fees over the coming years if it is completed.

MIDDLE EAST

  • ISRAEL-UAE: Israeli pipeline company EAPC had signed a preliminary deal to help transport oil from the United Arab Emirates to Europe via a pipeline that connects the Red Sea city of Eilat and the Mediterranean port of Ashkelon. It would save time, fuel and costs versus crossing the Suez Canal, to transport oil back and forth between other countries. It could provide quicker access for consumers in Asia to oil produced in the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions.

MIDDLE EAST

  • After the peace agreement signed recently, Israel will propose that the UAE help promote the construction of a land pipeline between Saudi Arabia and Israel for oil and distillates for shipping from the Mediterranean coast onto Europe and North America using the existing infrastructure of the EAPC pipeline. Such plan would be cheaper and safer by bypassing the dangerous and costly Straits of Hormuz and Suez Canal shipping routes.

BELARUS:

  • BELARUS: Alexander Lukashenko, the leader of Belarus, said he would be ready to hold new elections and hand over power, an attempt to pacify mass protests and strikes that pose the biggest challenge yet to his rule. Russia is watching closely as Belarus hosts pipelines that carry Russian energy exports to the West and viewed by Moscow as a buffer zone against NATO. U.S. and the EU want Russia not to meddle, after Moscow told Lukashenko it was ready to provide military help against an external threat.

EUROPE:

NORD STREAM 2:
  • US expanded sanctions against Nord Stream 2 (that includes the construction of two pipelines from the coast of Russia through the Baltic Sea to Germany). Will directly affect more than 120 companies from over 12 European countries and will block about 700 mln euro of investments for completing construction of the pipeline. The sanctions seem to be designed to increase the supply of more expensive American LNG to Europe.
  • Germany is preparing to strike back if the US introduces additional sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
